Scarce Vintage Austrian Cold-Painted Spleter - Cocker Spaniel Dog - Match Striker - Ashtray - Pipe Rest c1930
Here on offer is a vintage Austrian cold-painted detailed figure/match stricker of a Cocker Spaniel dog, cast from spleter metal, circa 1930.
It has a wonderful gentle expression with focused eyes that makes it very appealing to any dog lover.
This match striker was designed and made in Austria back in the 1930’s and has a hidden combination of smoking functions.
Its back hinges open to reveal a pipe rest and ashtray with the interior displaying a wonderful gold wash finish. On the underside it has a metal flap that opens to provide a way to clean out the ashes.
The head also hinges down to reveal a carefully hidden removable striker lighter and it has a fixed metal striker strip.
My understanding is that this type of lighter, pipe rest, ashtray combination, can more commonly be found in the image of a Scottish Terrier. The Cocker Spaniel figure is far more unique and highly collectible.
He is in great condition with some paint loss, that only serves to add to its vintage charm.
It will make a terrific addition to a tobacciana collection, but could also make a really great “secret” hiding place for keys, small jewellery or other special items.
It measures 6” (15.3cm) long by 3.5” (9cm) high and weighs a heavy 505g.
