A Sweetheart WW1 Metal and Celluloid Matchbox Cover Depicting a Photo of a Child Wearing a Bonnet

Here on offer is a WW1 period “Sweetheart” metal and celluloid matchbox cover, that depicts a really sweet period photograph of a child wearing a bonnet on the front.

I can only assume that this was made for a solider going off to war so he could easily have a photo of his child with him during those dark times.

The picture has been completely sealed by the celluloid outer coating, so must have been an option the makers offered to make back in those days?

On the front, the photo is set in an oval window, that is surrounded with a blue rope pattern. It also has a patent reference, being:
PAT. 13773.

Along the spine it reads:

MATCHES

Then on the back are the grouped flaps of the WW1 allied countries, such as France, Japan etc

The whole matchbox cover is coated in a clear celluloid to protect the images. There is no damage to the celluloid as such, just some age related foxing and staining.

The matchbox cover measures 2.4” (6cm) high by 1.6” (4cm) wide and is 0.9” (2.3cm) deep.

It weighs 25g.
