Antique Twin Curved Bladed Bistoury Surgical Scalpel by HILLS of Kings Street, Borough, c1880

Here on offer is an antique twin curved bladed bistoury surgical scalpel by HILLS of Kings Street, Borough, England, circa 1880.

A "bistoury scalpel" is a long, narrow surgical knife with a blade that can be either straight or curved, often used for making precise incisions in delicate surgeries; essentially, a bistoury is a more specific term for a particular kind of scalpel blade with a slender design.

This fine example has exquisitely patterned tortoiseshell scales, with only a very tiny chip to one of the rounded ends that is hard to see.

The scales house two polished curved steel blades, one has a sharp tip and the other has a blunted non cutting tip. The cutting edges are still razor sharp and there is just some very minor surface pitting to the finish. They both have the maker’s details stamped on the ricasso, being:

HILLS
KINGS ST
BOROUGH

Now each blade had a latching locking mechanism, but the tips of the latch have sadly been broken off both of the latches on the spine, so they no longer lock in place. They are actually stiff to hinge open, so stay in place and display perfectly, but now can be forced further back against the spine before they stop, as shown in my last photograph.

Both blades have a 2.75” (7cm) cutting edge and when both are fully extended the scalpel measures 9.5” (24cm) long and when the blades are folded closed, it measures 3.8” (9.7cm) long.

It weighs 20g.
