Edwardian Sheffield Hallmarked Silver “Prize” Tea Spoon Engraved with Crossed Rifles by John Round and Sons Ltd 1902
Here on offer is a fine example of an Edwardian Sheffield hallmarked silver “Prize” tea spoon, engraved with “crossed rifles” by John Round and Sons Ltd 1902.
My understanding is that this type of silver spoon with the “crossed rifles”, were made just after the end of the 2nd Boer War. Returning soldiers took part in a lot of rifle/shooting competitions at this time and individual or sets of such spoons, were given out as prizes.
On this example it has an ornately engraved pattern on the front of the handle and around the oval top section, along with two finely detailed crossed rifles.
Stamped on the reverse there is a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), a Crown for the assay office of Sheffield and the date letter “k” for the year 1902.
It also shows the makers mark, “JR” set in an oval, which I believe stands for the maker:
John Round and Sons Ltd, of Sheffield, England.
It measures 5.25” (13.3cm) long and weighs 20g.
