Original Ex-Royal Navy Siebe Gorman Divers Knife c1970
Here on offer is an original ex-Royal Navy, Siebe Gorman divers knife with its heavy cast brass sheath, circa 1970.
I believe this is the final ‘fifth style’ of divers knife that Siebe Gorman made.
This variation is in fact the last real divers knife made by Siebe Gorman and dates from the late 1970’s or early 1980’s.
I believe they did make a series of commemorative knives around this time, for the 175th anniversary of Siebe Gorman, but these were made for collectors, rather than for divers to use.
I don’t have any provenance with this knife, but was told it was owned and used by a Royal Navy diver.
The pommel is made from brass and the nut fits tightly, securing the black “Ebonite” ribbed grip in place that is in perfect undamaged condition.
The plain oval polished brass finger guard and ferrule, complete the hilt assembly.
The really impressive 7.7” double-edged steel blade retains all of its original cross graining and displays a polished smooth finish on both sides.
However, the blade suffers from areas of “staining/greying” on both sides of the blade.
It looks like the grease that was used to protect the blade has reacted with the steel, causing the staining of the metal, possibly as a result of being stored in an attic?
With some gentle cleaning, some of the staining may vanish?
The blade edges are excellent as are the brass fittings and I would say it has only seen very light use, during its service life.
On one side of the blade, the maker’s name:
SIEBE
GORMAN
has been electro-engraved in a large font.
The heavy sheath has been cast from brass and is in its original excellent condition, with a slight patina to the metal finish. The top is fluted and there is a slot in the reverse to retain a leather strap, that is not present on this knife.
On the reverse there is also a flat copper rivet that secures the internal blade spring to hold the knife firmly in the sheath.
The end of the sheath has an oval opening to allow any water to escape.
The blade measures 7.7” (19.5cm) and the knife itself 13.2” (33.4cm) long.
It weighs a heavy 905g.
