Rare Antique Hallmarked Silver & Gold Watch Fob Medal Awarded by Crossway Cycling Club to F.W. Ryland for 50 Mile Time Trial 1910

Here on offer is an antique hallmarked silver & gold watch fob medal awarded by Crossway Cycling Club to F.W. Ryland for a 50 mile time trial race, in 1910.

50 mile bicycle and even tricycle racing was popular in the late Victorian period and they still take place today.

F.W. Ryland’s race time of 2HRS.41MINS.48SECS is an impressive result, given how basic the cycles where back in 1910.

I can’t actually find any specific information about the Crossway Cycling Club or F.W. Ryland, but it worth further researching into this early cycling award medal.

The ornate shield shaped fob has been made from a heavy piece of sterling silver and the upper edges and central shield are inlaid with 9ct rose gold.

The smaller central shield is engraved in a gothic text with the winner’s initials:

F W R

On the reverse it is engraved with the winner’s details and race time:

CROSSWAY C.C.
50 MILES TIME TRIAL
9-7-10
F.W. RYLAND
2HRS.41MINS.48SECS.

There is also a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “l” for the year 1910.

It also shows the makers mark, “W.W.C” set in an indented rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:

William Walter Cashmore

of Warstone Lane, Birmingham; subsequently Hockley Hill, Birmingham.

Attached to the top is a suspension loop and ring that is also stamped with the Lion Passant for English silver (925).

This fob is truly a top quality piece that is in excellent condition.

It measures 2” (5.2cm) to top of ring by 1.2” (3cm) wide and weighs 15g.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
