Large Imperial German 105mm Brass Shell Case Marked PATRONENFABRIK KARLSRUHE 1901
Here on offer is an early example of a large German 105mm brass shell case that is impressed on the base:
PATRONENFABRIK
KARLSRUHE
1901
'Patronenfabrik' means cartridge factory and ‘Karlsruhe’ is the town in Germany where it was made in 1901.
These are the only markings I can see in the case, which is unusual? There are normally various arsenal and inspection and Naval marks on such shell cartridges.
The 105mm shell cartridge was was primarily used on pre-war Imperial German Navy light cruisers and U-boats. Later when these ships had larger calibre guns installed in late 1916, the naval guns were moved onto land for fixed emplacement.
IT is in great condition with just a couple of age dents that could be pushed out if so required.
This is really an impressive piece of Imperial German militaria, that is large enough to act as a walking stick or umbrella stand.
The case is 49cm tall and measures 115mm (4.5”) diameter at the base (rim) then 105mm around the main body, which then tappers at the top to 75mm.
It weighs a heavy 2.4Kg.
