Antique Brass-Bound Walnut Military Campaign Writing Slope with Key and Inkwell c1860

Here on offer is an antique brass-bound walnut campaign writing slope, with key and inkwell, circa 1860.

This is a fine example of an antique military campaign writing slope.

It has been made from fine grained English walnut and has inset brass banding around all the outer edges in a campaign manner.

There is also a blank brass name plaque set into the lid, along with a four pointed start pattern brass lock escutcheon on the front.

The twin lever lock works and comes with its key with a brass hockey fob.

The sides are fitted with a pair of working brass recessed cup handles, in the campaign style.

Inside it has a brown slightly rippled thin leather skiver, that looks to be a later but not new replacement. I would also say the brass hinges have also been replaced at some point in its life?

Each half of the skiver lifts to gain access to a documents compartment.

The lower compartment has a crack in its wooden base, which doesn’t affect the integrity of the box.

There are also two stepped sides on the base which I think originally would have been the support for a “false bottom” flat section of wood, providing a secret document storage area? There are still two slide-out draws that are held in place by a swivel brass lever.

It also comes with three compartments at the upper edge of the interior, a lidded pen tray, a small sloped area and an inkwell holder.

It comes with a brass screw topped glass ink well in great original condition.

This is an appealing antique military campaign writing slope with quality walnut and brass fittings.

Closed it measures 14” (35.5cm) long by 9.5” (24.2cm) wide and 5.5” (14cm) high.

It weighs a heavy 3.4Kg.
