Scarce “Ancient Order of Foresters” Full Size Wooden Ceremonial Axe by Toye & Co. Ltd London

Here on offer is an unusual and hard to find example of what appears to be an “Ancient Order of Foresters” wooden fraternal ceremonial axe, made by Toye & Co. Ltd, of London.

The Ancient Order of Foresters was formed in 1834, but its origins lie in a much older society called the Royal Foresters formed in the 18th century. Meeting in Leeds, this seems at first to have been a purely sociable society until the members decided that they had a duty to assist their fellow men who fell into need "as they walked through the forests of life". This 'need' arose principally when a breadwinner fell ill, could not work and, therefore, received no wages. Illness and death left families financially distressed and often destitute. Relief of this need has been the main purpose of the Foresters throughout their long history. The society is now known as “Foresters Friendly Society”, and provides its members with insurance policies against sickness and death.

The full size axe has been constructed completely from wood and was used for ceremonial purposes within the society’s various “Courts” or “Lodges”.

Now normally these axes tend to have the images of their arms and number of the branch order painted on the axe head.

On this one, the black painted axe head is undecorated and I believe some axes were shared between courts and also used for larger group events.

The handle has been made in two sections that are joined by two wooden dowls, making a very secure join. I imagine it was made this to come apart this way to assist with packing and transport?

I would date it to circa 1920, given the type of Toye & Co. Ltd, makers label, that it has fitted to the bottom end of the handle. (please see my photos)

It is in great condition for its age, with some scratch marks to the black paint on the axe head and a weird mark/graining to the finish of the wood that was there before it was originally painted? The top tip has broken off and been glued back in place at some time in its life.

The long handle retains most of its original varnish finish and is in undamaged condition.

Toye & Co. Ltd, now Toye, Kenning & Spencer is a British jewellery and ceremonial clothing manufacturer that was founded in 1685 and today still retains Toye family members.

These axes are extremely hard to find and actually make great and safe display pieces in their own right.

The axe measures 33.5” (85cm) long and the axe head is 8.5” (21.5cm) wide with a 6.75” (17.2cm) cutting edge.

It weighs 630g.
