Antique French made Japanese Tanto Dagger Souvenir Letter Opener with the Edinburgh Maule’s Department Store Slogan “Meet me at Maules

Here on offer is a souvenir letter opener that is a bit of a conundrum?

It is an antique French made souvenir letter opener, created in the style of a miniature ceremonial Japanese Tanto dagger, with raised scenes of Japanese citizens including Samurai warriors, on the sheath and grip.

The grip and sheath are made from a hard moulded plastic. That is coloured to look like ivory or bone. Near the tip of the sheath is the word DEPOSE, meaning made in France.

The single edged chrome plated blade now shows signs of plating loss. It has etched on one side the phrase, “Meet me at Maules”

Now I believe this relates back to the Edinburgh Maule’s department store slogan “Meet me at Maules”.

The great Edinburgh, Maules (Robert Maule & Son) department store, was where the phrase "Meet me at Maules" was coined. It used to occupy the corner of Hope Street and Princes Street in Edinburgh.

Therefore, I believe this letter opener was originally sold as a “souvenir” at the Maules department store, in Edinburgh back in the early 1900’s.

The blade measures 4.6” (11.1cm) long and the knife is 7.25” (18.4cm) in total length.

It weighs 68g.
