Rare Antique Trocar Medical Instrument c1840

Here on offer is a rare example of an antique Trocar medical instrument circa 1840.

The Trocar served as a tool for extracting accumulated bodily fluids until the development of diuretics. It involved inserting the trocar, along with its accompanying cannula pipe, into either the chest or abdomen. Subsequently, the trocar was withdrawn, allowing the fluid to be drained through the cannula.


The case of this fine example has been skilfully turned from a natural material and the metal fittings are made from silver.

The top of this delicately carved piece unscrews to reveal a silver cannula sheath which is inserted over the central needle.

The only markings I can see on this piece is the number “1”, which possibly relates to the size of the Trocar?

It is in excellent undamaged condition, with just some light age staining to the natural material.

This is a fine and rare example of this type of Antique surgical instrument and would make a great addition to any medical instrument collection.

The complete Trocar measures 4.25” (11.4cm) long and the needle is 1.75” (4.4cm).

It weighs 4.5g.
