Scarce Hallmarked Silver and Horn Letter Opener by Philippa Jane Merriman 2001
Here on offer rare hallmarked silver and bovine cow horn letter opener by Philippa Jane Merriman dating to 2001.
The blade and tang have been made from one piece of beautifully patterned cow horn, that has two flat sections of English sterling silver completing the handle, that are held in place by five silver pins.
Stamped on one section is a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver, 925 in an oval for sterling silver, a Rose for the assay office of Sheffield and the date letter “b” for the year 2001.
It also shows the makers mark, that reads as “PJM”, which relates to the English maker:
Merriman Silver Ltd (Philippa Jane Merriman) of Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
Philippa Merriman was the Director of Merriman Silver Ltd, that I believe dissolved in 2015. Before turning her full attention to silversmithing, she was a lecturer in philosophy and has written books about the history of silver.
This letter opener is truly a fine quality piece that is in excellent condition, with no damage to the horn or silver sections.
It measures 5.75” (14.6cm) long and weighs 24g.
