Vintage Icelandic Hand Carved Reindeer Antler Letter Opener/Knife Signed - Hilson Lia Thomas
Here on offer is an Icelandic letter opener/knife that has been hand carved from reindeer antler and bone.
The blade seems to have been carved and shaped from a reindeer bone and the front depicts a couple of circular patterns and a reindeer pulling a sleigh. Below this is a name which appears to reads as:
Hilson Lia Thomas
who I assume was the artist/carver of this piece?
On the back of the blade is written:
REYKJAVIK ICELAND
The grip has been made from a section of straight reindeer antler that has been hand carved with a ‘scrimshaw’ decoration, of a native/geometric design.
I believe these knifes where made for the tourist trade back in the 1960’s.
This is fine example of what appears to be a scarce signed letter opener, that makes a great display item and can only increase in value!
It measures 9” (23cm) long and 1.25” (3.2cm) wide at the grip tip.
It weighs 85g.
