Large Ornate South American Gaucho Dagger or Daga with German Makers Stamp of - Di Medici Solingen

Here on offer is an unusual and large example of a South American Gaucho dagger or Daga, a rare type of Gaucho knife, with a German maker’s stamp of “Di Medici, Solingen”.

This impressive ornately decorated dagger was made in Germany, probably in the early 20th century for the South American market, where these knives are highly prized.

The Gaucho knife usually has a single edged pointed blade, whereas this example has a long 9” double edged spear shaped dagger blade, that is in near mint condition.

It is maker marked, Di Medici, set in an arched shaped window setting, with Solingen, Rostfrei set below.

The ornately cast handle and plan domed pommel appears to be made from nickel silver?

The “S” shaped crossguard with flower patterned tips is made from gilt brass.

The real beauty of this dagger is in the scabbard, this is also cast from nickel silver with a gilt brass throat.

It is decorated with classical Greek style scenes of acanthus leaves, flowers, urns and the frog button is in the form of a classically robed female figure. The ornate chape finial is cast in the form of two mythical serpent creatures.

The whole dagger is in excellent, almost mint condition, with just some slight wear to the high points and gilt finish.

The dagger has a 9” (22.8cm) long blade and the dagger in its sheath measures approximately 15.2” (38.5cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 520g.
