Unusual Vintage GOODYEAR Tyres Advertising Double Bladed Penknife – Roger Inman c1960
Here on offer is an unusual vintage GOODYEAR Tyres advertising double bladed penknife with Sheffield stainless steel blades, circa 1960.
The knife handle has been made in one piece from an ivory coloured hard plastic and has the famous GOODYEAR tyre logo with the winged foot of Mercury, in raised text on one side.
Please note that the colour of this handle is actually the light shade shown in my photos, the deeper coloured photos was just caused by the lighting and red background.
Central to Goodyear's corporate logo is the winged foot of Mercury. Founder F.A. Seiberling was inspired by a statuette of the Roman deity which was the “messenger of the gods” and was the patron of such things as travel and commerce.
Both knives are made from stainless steel and the smaller blade has the details stamped on one side of the ricasso:
STAINLESS
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND
The larger blade has the same details stamped on one side of the ricasso:
STAINLESS
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND
and on the other the patent numbers:
PATENTS
BRIT821478
USA2930121
Now Roger Inman (1915-2013) registered the patents on this unusual knife in the UK and USA in 1957/58. Roger Inman was the co-managing director of Harrison Fisher & Company Ltd.
Harrison Fisher & Company Ltd made the famous Taylors Eye Witness range of cutlery and knives and more than likely made this knife.
This knife has been used and both blades show signs of use but retain their bright finish and a good cutting edge. The smaller has lost the very tip of the blade and the on the larger, the tip is slightly misshapen.
This knife will make a wonderful addition to any penknife collection and seems to be a rare find!
One blade measures 1.5” (3.8cm) long and the other 1.25” (3.2cm). When closed, the knife measures 3.25” (8.3cm) and weighs 21g.
