Unusual King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra 1902 Coronation Mug with Imperial Federation Crest by W.T. Copeland & Sons

Here on offer unusual King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra 1902 coronation mug, that was made by W.T. Copeland & Sons, that is in perfect undamaged condition.

It is finished in a tin white glaze and depicts brown printed transfer portraits of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, surrounded with laurel and oak leaves on one side.

Interestingly on the other side it depicts the crest of the Imperial Federation, with the names of the ten countries that were involved in its proposed, but unsuccessful formation.

The Imperial Federation was a series of proposals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to create a federal union to replace the existing British empire, presenting it as an alternative to colonial imperialism. No such proposal was ever adopted, but various schemes were popular in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other colonial territories.

The Coronation of King Edward VII (1841-1910) and Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) took place in Westminster Abbey on 9th August 1902.

It was originally planned for 26th June 1902, but the King was taken ill so was postponed until August.

You can see that this mug was originally made with date of JUNE 26th on the front, that was then crossed through and the date AUGUST 9th was added, interestingly all under the top glaze?

On the base of the mug is the partial maker’s mark, being for W.T. Copeland & Sons, Stoke-on-Trent, England.

It is in mint condition with no cracks or repairs, just some light age crazing to the glaze on the base and inside of the mug.

The mug measures 3.2” (8cm) high and 3.25” (8.2cm) diameter.

It weighs 175g.
