Antique Chrome Plated Snuff Box with Horse Racing Scene c1920
Here on offer is an antique chrome plated snuff box with horse racing scene, circa 1920 but could be older?
The rectangular box seems to have been made from formed steel plate that has then been chrome plated.
It rounded corners so it would fit in a pocket comfortably.
The hinged lid displays the coloured image of three race horses actually taking part in a horse race. The image seems to have been covered in an early clear celluloid covering, similar to that found on matchbox covers of the same period.
Inside the box retains its original gilt finish.
There is no maker’s mark that I can find and the box is in used condition, with some light rust pitting and loss of plating to the outside.
The image on the lid also shows some spots of staining under the celluloid and a tiny area has worn through at the bottom left hand corner.
The hinge still works as it should, but one end is raised up slightly.
This was clearly more of a working man’s snuff box, but is still a great collectable piece, for any horse racing enthusiast.
It measures 3.7” (9.3cm) wide by 2.7” (6.8cm) deep and is 1” (2.5cm) thick.
It weighs 80g.
