Beautiful Antique Victorian Silver-Plated Toast Rack by John Round & Son c1863

Here on offer is an antique Victorian silver-plated toast rack by John Round & Son, circa 1863.

This fine example of a six slot toast rack is in excellent in fact I would say mint condition and has a beautiful ornate pieced base, feet and handle, that is unusual to find on such period pieces.

On the underside it is impressed with:

135 which I believe is the model number.

It is also stamped with the silver plate hallmarks, J R & S and a symbol I can’t make out?

J R & S is the makers mark, which relates to John Round & Son, of Sheffield, England.

This mark was only used between the years of 1863 and 1874.

The firm was established by John Round in Sheffield in 1847 as a small familiar workshop attached to his house in Tudor Street. The business proved successful and the firm in partnership with his son Edwin went under the title of John Round & Son (1863).

In 1874 the firm became John Round & Son Ltd and in 1886 the business of Ridge, Allcard & Co (Lions Works, Eyre Lane) was amalgamated and John Ridge became the manager.

The main factory was the renewed Tudor Works, Tudor Street, Sheffield while various showrooms operated in London. The firm was active at Tudor Works Tudor St (1852-1934) and Pond Hill (1935-1957).

The toast rack measures 7.25” (18.5cm) long by 4” (10.1cm) wide and 8” (20.3cm) high.

It weighs 480g.
