Unusual and Large Antique Brass and Leather Campaign Travelling Inkwell c1850

Here on offer is an unusual and large antique brass and leather campaign travelling inkwell, circa 1850.

This large cylindrical shaped travelling inkwell has been made from brass with a thin brown leather outer sleaving around the main body and the lid.

The glass inkwell is fixed inside and is in perfect excellent condition, with just one tiny chip to the inner rim.

The neck of the glass inkwell is sealed by the hinged lid being pushed down and then slightly turned, so that the lid lower rim slots under the two small brass slotted pillars. This is a very unusual style of locking mechanism and I couldn’t find another such example?

It dates from around the mid 19th century and has clearly been used and loved by a senior British officer, as part of his writing set, during his various campaign services.

The brass now has a great aged patina, with some staining to the finish. The leather is still surprisingly in great condition, with a rubbed/polished finish and some pimples/tiny bumps under the surface.

This fine example is designed to protect the glass inkwell, which it does exceptionally well, being of a very sturdy construction.

It measures 2.4” (6cm) tall and 2.5” (6.3cm) diameter at the base.

It weighs 142g.
