Antique George III Period Small Silver Plated and Glass Travelling Inkwell c1820
Here on offer is an antique George III period, small silver plated and crystal glass travelling inkwell, circa 1820.
This silver plate on copper and crystal glass travelling inkwell, is the classic design with a lid that bolts down.
However, it stands out for its smaller size and the fact that the top part is silver plated rather than being just brass.
Typically these inkwells were used in writing slopes, which were made with specific compartments to hold them, however, they could also be carried and used independently.
There is some wear and discolouration to the silver plate and a small chip to the bottom edge of the glass, as shown in my photos. The glass base shows the light usage scratch marks you would expect on a genuine Georgian period piece.
The lid closes and screws in place perfectly and it seems to have a replacement leather circular washer acting as the seal under the lid, so it can still be used today!
It measures 1.5” (3.7cm) square by 1.5” (3.7cm) high (when closed) and weighs 92g.
