Rare Limited-Edition 12” Model of Gipsy Moth IV - No. 328 of 500 using wood from the Original Boat’s Keel
Here on offer is a limited-edition 12” long model of the famous Gipsy Moth IV that was sailed by Sir Francis Chichester, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for this first ever solo round-the-world voyage, by a sailing bota, in 1966/67.
I believe that the Gipsy Moth Trust had 500 models made by Tribute Models Nauticalia, London, to raise some funds to help with the restoration of the original Gipsy Moth IV, back in 2004?
The boat is actually a very detailed scale model of the original boat, but the structure is delicate and needs to be treated gently to avoid damaging it, especially the rigging and guardrails. There are just a couple of small stains on the front sail, otherwise it is in excellent condition.
It is mounted on a rectangular wooden base that has been made from wood taken from the keel of the original Gipsy Moth IV, during one of its restoration projects.
There is a small brass plaque attached to the top of the base that lists the limited-edition number which reads:
328 of 500
mahogany recovered from the keel of the original Gipsy Moth IV.
Underneath the base there is a maker’s label for, Tribute Models Nauticalia, London.
This top-quality set of travel cutlery would have been useful for a serving officer during a campaign and also for field sports or picnics etc.
The model measures 12” (30.5cm) long and 14” (35.6cm) tall from the bottom of the base to the top of the main mast.
It weighs 300g.
