Rare P&O Line – 9.5” Ironstone China Compote Dish by G. L. Ashworth & Bros c1862

Here on offer is genuine and rare P&O Line “Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company”, Victorian 9.5” ironstone china compote dish, by G. L. Ashworth & Bros of Hanley, circa 1862.

This dish would have been used on the early paddle-steamers and steam ships that P&O operated during the mid to late 1800’s.

This white glazed compote dish is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks and has a blue underglaze and gilt painted lines around the edge of the dish and the base of the pedestal. The gilt lines has almost completely worn away, but small sections do remain.

In the centre of the dish is a slightly smudged image in blue, of a rising sun with eyes and the old P&O motto:

QUIS SEPARABIT that means “who shall separate (us)”

Underneath the base it has a slightly smudged image of the Royal Coat of Arms maker’s mark for G. L. Ashworth & Bros of Hanley, that was used from 1862 thru to 1891.

There is also an impressed mark that reads:

REAL IRONSTONE CHINA
and two letter “F”s.

P&O is an abbreviation of the full company name: The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. P&O began life as "The Peninsular Steam Navigation Company". In 1840 "Oriental" was added to reflect the company's expanding services eastwards beyond the Iberian Peninsula to Egypt and the Orient.

This type of compote dish is very rare to find especially in such excellent condition and makes a great addition to any maritime collection.

A real museum piece!

The dish measures 9.5” (16cm) diameter and is 2” (5.2cm) tall, weighing 715g.
