Charming Victorian Period – Finely Detailed 17th Century Shoe Shaped Pewter Snuff Box
Here on offer is charming Victorian period made, 17th century shoe shaped pewter snuff box.
These shoe snuff boxes are believed to have been made in the Victorian period as faithful representations of late 17th and early 18th century shoes.
Made in pewter rather than wood allowed the craftsmen to add far more detail than would otherwise be possible. They are such good models that they have been included in collections of shoes by specialist collectors.
This fine pewter example has an ornate hinged lid with a foliate swirling border.
The body is covered in engine-turning style basket weave motif with fastening studs depicted on the front and a low wedge heal at the back.
What I love about this shoe is the fine detailing of the tread and hob nails on the sole and heal, which is unusual.
I am led to believe this is possibly a model of a man's shoe from about 1680?
There are no maker’s marks or stamps on the shoe that I can see but I think it is British or possibly French in origin?
It is in excellent condition, retaining the fine detail to the engraving. There are just some very shallow dings to the lid and body of the shoe.
It measures 3.6” (9.1cm) long and 1.1” (2.9cm) high and weighs 60g.
