Post 1958 Webley Junior Series 2 .177 Calibre Air Pistol with Original Box/Instructions
Here on offer an excellent example of a post 1958 Webley Junior Series 2 .177 calibre air pistol, please see pages 95 to 108 of Gordon Bruce’s book ‘Webley Air Pistols’ for a reference.
The air pistol is undamaged and retains nearly all of its original blued and plum coloured finish, there is just some light pitting to the finish, mainly on the barrel section. I believe this pistol was made between 1958 and 1973.
Differences in the metal composition of the body casting and steel air cylinder often resulted in slight variations during the finishing operation. In the final colouring process, the barrel and air cylinder where blued in the normal way, while the remainder of the body was produced in a plum colour by the same treatment. This actually resulted in a quite pleasing colour combination, as can be seen on this example.
Webley Junior’s in this condition are almost impossible to find these days, especially with their original box, making this a real collector’s piece.
This version is fitted with the black plastic grips with embossed Webley logos.
The left side of the cylinder is stamped:
THE WEBLEY JUNIOR .177
WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD BIRMINGHAM
MADE IN ENGLAND
The words seem to have been highlighted with white paint, which is unusual as my understanding is that was only used on the black phosphate versions?
In 1958 Webley relocated their factory from Birmingham 4 to Birmingham 21, postal area. Weapons produced after 1958 were marked either Birmingham or Birmingham 21.
The front of the cylinder is stamped with the batch number “690”.
After WW2, the practice of stamping each air pistol with an individual serial number in sequence ceased. Instead, every air pistol was marked with a production batch number, which was stamped on the front of the cylinder and on the left-hand side of frame, under the grip plate.
Under the grip plate on this pistol, it is stamped with “690”.
This pistol still retains its original box made from thick card, that has the “how to use” instructions, stuck to the underside of the lid. There is a small blank area at the bottom left-hand corner where the owner was asked to enter the number of the pistol in case it was lost. The owner has actually entered “069” instead of “690” as they have just read the number, upside down, which is easy to do!
It has a full-size cover label on the top, showing the pistol model, against a blue and red background. The edges of the sides of the base and lid are depicted as imitation leather. There is another smaller label at one end of the lid that has a small circular black label with red lettering, stating:
NOT TO BE SOLD TO ANYONE UNDER 17
The box is in worn and grubby condition, with some rust staining on the inside and repair tape to the inner edges. There is also one pellet hole through the lid and base, where someone has fired a pellet at it, in the past!
It has a blade foresight & adjustable rear sight and it cocks and fires perfectly with a strong spring action.
The air pistol barrel measures 6.74” (17cm) long and with the box, it weighs 855g.
