Antique Wooden Plane used on Exeter Cathedral
I have been lucky enough to obtain a large set of different shaped antique wooden planes, that were used by the head carpenter who worked at the famous medieval Exeter Cathedral, in England.
Here on offer is one of those wooden planes he used, this one seems has a maker’s stamp, but it is very small and almost impossible to make out, but seems to end with “& SONS”?
At one end, it is stamped with the maker’s details and some further stampings which read as:
A. HARRINGTON
At the other end it shows some hammer marks and:
A. HARRINGTON
3/8
This fine example has signs of being used for many, many years. There is some wear and patination to the wood and oxidisation to the metal blade as you would expect, but it could be sharpened and still used.
Wooden plough planes have a long, rich history and have been used by master craftsmen to produce some most stunning pieces of furniture and many pieces still furnish people's homes today. These planes are still owned and used today by numerous craftsmen and hobbyist's as functional tools, as a way of using a tool a craftsmen held in their hand 100-300 years ago, as an ornament / show piece or as part of a collection.
It measures 9.5” (24.1cm) long, 1.35” (3.25cm) thick and weighs 470g.
This is a much sought after collectable, with a connection to the famous Exeter Cathedral.
