Algerian Silver Bracelet with a Nautical Theme in Memory of the WW2 French Battleship – JEAN BART - c1945
Here on offer is an 8.25” long Algerian silver nautical themed bracelet, that was made in memory of the famous WW2 French Battleship – JEAN BART – circa 1945.
I believe these bracelets were made as souvenirs and in memory of the ship being docked at Casablanca for most of WW2.
The bracelet has 7 individual pieced panels, each with a nautical theme, consisting of, from left to right:
An anchor (with one missing tip)
A crab
A sailing boat
Two lobsters
A lifebuoy with the ship’s name “Jean Bart”
A starfish
An anchor (with main section missing)
Then there is a small linked plated fixing chain with a clam or oyster shell at the end.
On the back it has a silver mark on two of the panels, of a “star inside a crescent moon”. I believe this is the silver mark for Algerian silver.
The think this silver is of a lower grade, probably 800, than the normal sterling silver at 925. It now has a slightly dulled finish to the silver which would polish bright if required.
It is a shame about the damage to the anchors, but this doesn’t distract from the fine work that has been undertaken to make memorial bracelet.
From the tip of the hook to the end of the link chain it measures 8.25” (21cm) long and each panel is 1.2” (3cm) high.
It weighs 26g.
