Large Antique Gilt Brass 2.75” Pocket Barometer with Case by Short & Mason Ltd, London c1910

Here on offer is a beautiful antique gilt brass pocket barometer with original fitted leather case by Short & Mason Ltd, London, circa 1910.

Short & Mason were established by Thomas Short and James Mason in 1875, they became a limited company around 1900. The firm made and sold barographs, aneroid barometers, compasses, aviation instruments such as altimeters, indicators and gauges (Sestrel brand).

This fine large (2.75") example has a silvered and engraved dial calibrated in “inches of mercury” with a marked range from 18 to 31.

The upper portion has the standard meteorological terms “RAIN”, “CHANGE” and “FAIR” and underneath it is marked “Compensated”.

The lower portion has the maker’s name:

Short & Mason Ltd
London

The outer crown actuated rotating altitude ring is marked from 0 to 15000 Feet.

The silvered dial face does have some age related tarnishing to the finish, around the outer edges.

The fine blued steel pointer is set beneath the thick glass face, that is in perfect condition.

It has the classical barrel-form pocket watch case with pillar suspension ring and crown.

On the back is the small movement adjustment screw and the barometer is in working order. Has been tested by applying pressure in a sealed plastic bag and the needle moves!

This fine example retains the original gilt finish but there is some loss of gilt to suspension ring.

The fitted leather hinged case is in excellent condition, covered in red leather and lined with green velvet. It has a brass push button release latch on the side,

The barometer measures 2.75” (7cm) diameter by 0.9” (2.3cm) thick.

With the case, it weighs 232g.
