Small Carved Wooden WW1 Officer’s Cap Snuff or Trinket Box - POW Treen

Here on offer is a wonderful example of a small carved wooden snuff or trinket box, made in image of a WW1 Officers Cap.

It has been hand carved from a branch of light-coloured wood, possibly sycamore.

The carver has managed to use the centre of the branch, with its beautiful growth rings, as the centre of the cap.

I have seen other examples of items made with this type of wood that where actually WW1 prisoner of war (POW) made pieces.

Unfortunately, this piece is not signed or dated but could possibly be a WW1 POW made piece?

The top of the cap just lifts off to reveal the inertia but it doesn’t have an airtight seal so given this fact and the shape of the cap, if it was used for snuff, it would be a desk or table snuff box, not a pocket version.

It is in excellent condition with a small natural crack to the lid and a small old repair to the inner rim, where a couple of small sections have been glued back in place at some point in its life.

The top of the cap measures 1.9” (4.8cm) diameter and it weighs 10g.
