Original Early WW2 German Private Purchased PUMA Fighting Knife with the Scarce PUMA Head Logo

Here on offer is an original WW2 German Private Purchased PUMA (NAHKAMPFMESSER or Grabendolch) fighting knife with the scarce PUMA head logo.

This is a great example of the extremely desirable Puma Fighting Knife as used by German ground troops during WW2.

The two shaped dark red Bakelite grip plates are securely held in place to the spine, by three original steel rivets.
There are usage scratches and a ding near the top on one side of the grip.

The grip fits securely to the oval zinc crossguard but there is just the tinniest bit of play against the blade.
The 5.5” steel blade has a polished finish with a couple of age marks and shows signs of sharpening and rounding to the tip.

On one side of the ricasso it is stamped with the faint image of the PUMA head trade mark and the words:

PUMA
SOLINGEN

I believe this example is an early version as it has the manufacturing logo including the outline of a Puma in a diamond above the name and “TRADE MARK”, while the later versions just had “Solingen – Puma”; or “Gusstahl (stainless steel) - Puma”.

The scabbard is in great condition with some wear to the original factory period black enamel and very light surface rust marks. The shell is still affixed with the S shaped pressure spring clip on the reverse that was used to fasten the knife to belts or to secure inside of a tall Wehrmacht combat boot.

This is a great, field-used example of a desirable early WW2 German PUMA fighting knife.

The blade measures 5.5” (14cm) long and the knife is 9.6” (24.5cm) in total length.

It weighs 245g.
