Original WW2 Double Proofed Hitler Youth Knife with Motto by Wilhelm Halbach – “Christmas Tree” Logo and RZM M7/35

Here on offer is an original mid period original WW2 German double proofed Hitler Youth knife with motto by a rare to find maker, Wilhelm Halbach. The blade is marked with their “Christmas Tree” logo and RZM M7/35.

These transitional knives are becoming scarce to find and were made for a very short period before the issues over the right of the manufacturers to host their company logo’s on blades came to a head and was unfortunately lost to the Reich quality control authority (R.Z.M.).

The Wilhelm Halbach Stahlwarenfabrik company was founded in 1928. It registered with the Solingen authorities on March 3, 1931. The company was located on Scheidter Straße 8 in 1933. Come the Third Reich era, Halbach made HJ knives and SA/NSKK daggers, though are extremely rare. In the 1950 advertisement above, the company manufactured: cutlery, straight razors, scissors, professional, household and pocket knives. In the 1970s the company moved to Schlagbaumer Straß, then Schlachthof Straße 18 in 1983 and Mangenberger Straße 289 in 2000. The business was later acquired by Manfred Knott, who renamed it: "Wilhelm Halbach, Inhaber Manfred Knott." The company continues to manufacture: scissors, nail files and nail clippers in a workshop on Untenhöhscheid 12 in Solingen.

Now on this knife, the nickel-plated hilt fittings show some loss of plating and tarnishing especially where the strap has rubbed the surface and the curved section of the quillion.

The Bakelite grip plates are in excellent undamaged condition and are still held in place by the two original nickel dome headed rivets.

The HJ diamond emblem is also in great condition with just some age-related surface scratches to the enamel.

The blade is the version with a stepped ricasso and with a full blade motto “Blut und Ehre!”. The motto is now faint to see, but is visible when you angle the blade in the light.

It still has a bright finish with scratch marks and some light age pitting and staining in a couple of areas. The blade shape is good and the cutting edge just shows some very light sharpening. The tip has some light dings to the edge.

The reverse shows the double proof marks, one being a faint impressed mark for the seldom seen “Christmas Tree” logo, surrounded with the words GESETZL GESCHUTZT, for Wilhelm Halbach.
Below this is etched a RZM circle with the code M7/35.

The leather buffer pad is still in place.

The steel scabbard has one tiny dent on the back and shows considerable loss of paint to the finish.

The leather belt loop hanger and fastening strap and stud are still in place and working order. It does show some age wear and the strap is dry and fragile now.

On the reverse of the back strap, you can just make out the stamped maker’s mark, being LFS set across an oak leaf.

It appears it is rare to find a strap with a maker’s mark, but I can’t find any reference so the makers name?

The blade measures 5.5” (13.9cm) long and the knife is 9.6” (24.2cm) in total length.

Inserted in the scabbard it measures 9.9” (25.3cm) long.

It weighs 325g.
