Post WW2 British Military Machete with Leather Scabbard by B.H. & G. Ltd dated 1955

Here on offer is an original example of a post WW2 British military machete with a thick brown leather scabbard B.H. & G. Ltd dated 1955.

The two black composite grip slabs are in excellent solid condition. Unusually there are four smooth notches in the metal of the tang and both grips, that allows the four fingers of your hand to fit snuggly in the grip.

The grip slabs are fitted securely to the blade tang by five large copper rivets. There is a hole at the top so a lanyard or rope strap can be fitted.

The 14.6” heavy steel blade is also in great condition and still retains a sharp cutting edge.

It now has a polished finish with some light pitting marks and staining consistent with age along with signs of sharpening to the cutting edge.

I can’t see a maker’s mark or date on the blade, but the scabbard dates it to around 1955.

The original heavy duty brown leather scabbard is in great condition with all the original stitching and rivets in place. There is surface staining and cracking to the dry leather on the edges. On one edge there is a small split to the leather of about 1.5”.

It retains its large belt loop and single retaining strap with stud fastener, but part of the strap does have an age crack and the long section with the cut slit, has dried and perished and is now missing.

On the back of the loop it is impressed with the maker’s details, being B.H. & G. Ltd together with the date 1955. Above the maker's mark it is also stamped with what looks like the numbers 086 and a WD arrow.

I believe that B.H.& G. Ltd indicates it was made by Barrow, Hepburn & Gale of Bermondsey, London. They were established in the 1700’s and are internationally known as the manufacturer of the iconic Red Dispatch Boxes; a symbol of democracy & Britain’s constitutional monarchy. They are also known for making numerous military related leather items.

This post WW2 example has seen service, possibly in the Malayan Emergency, in Kenya (1948–60).

The machete measures 19.85” (50.5cm) long and has a 14.6” (37cm) blade.

With the scabbard, it weighs a heavy 915g.
