Scarce WW1 Commemorative Tape Measure with Portrait Photo of Sir John French
Here on offer is a scarce and original WW1 commemorative tape measure with a sepia photo portrait of Sir John French.
Field Marshal Sir John French, Earl of Ypres, was born in 1852. After serving briefly with the Royal Navy, he joined the Army in 1874, serving in the Sudan and South Africa during the Boer Wars. During 1912 - 1913, French served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff rising to the rank of Field Marshal in 1913. French was given command of the British Expeditionary Force on the outbreak of the First World War but his erratic performance led to his replacement by Haig in 1915. French was subsequently given command of the British Home Front for the remainder of the First World War, during which time he was required to quell the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. Sir John French died in 1925
The front of the tape measure, depicts a round sepia photo portrait of Sir John French in his military uniform.
I believe these small tin tape measures were made as commemorate and promotional pieces at the outbreak of WW1 and depicted a number of British military officers, such as French and Kitchener.
The cloth tape measure has been printed in units of inches and when fully extended, measures 30” long.
The tape is in great condition but does show some signs fragility and edge wear, but does extract and retract, with a little help.
The retracing ratchet spring is operated by pushing in the button on the back.
The outer case is in excellent condition and retains all its plating and the image of Sir John French is still crisp and clear.
It measures 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter and weighs 20g.
