Beautiful WW2 Period Marquetry Picture of a RAF Bristol Blenheim MK. IV Bomber by J.H. Bacon

Here on offer is a beautiful WW2 period marquetry picture of a RAF Bristol Blenheim MK. IV bomber by J.H. Bacon.

The picture has been made from sections of different coloured wood veneers, expertly cut and inlaid onto a wooden panel, so as to depict an RAF Bristol Blenheim MK. IV in flight.

On the front, bottom right-hand corner, it is signed J.H. Bacon.

Then on the back there is a label that reads:

J H Bacon
Room 7
Block 4
Chalfont Drive
N/Ham

From what I can find out, it appears that the facility that J.H. Bacon was located at, was a WW2 War Room at Chalfont Drive, Nottingham.

Its function was to act as a protected headquarters for the Commissioner, who would in the event
of war assume control of Home Defence Region 3.

The Nottingham Regional War Room (Region 3) was located within a complex of Government buildings at Chalfont Drive, Nottingham.

In 1965 during the cold war years, the War Room became “Regional Seat of Government 3” but unlike at Cambridge and Kirknewton where an extension was added on one side, at Nottingham it was built on the roof.

It is now a preserved building and its nuclear bunker is vacant and sealed to prevent access, mainly due to the asbestos in the building.

The marquetry picture measures 7.7” (19.5cm) by 6.6” (16.6cm) and weighs 175g.
