Japanese Samurai and Phoenix Satsuma High Relief Vase with Perforated and Dragon Design brass rim

Here on offer is an imprssive Japanese Samurai and Phoenix satsuma high relief vase with perforated and dragon design brass rim.

The front depicts a fine Samurai warrior with blade drawn about to confront an enemy behind him.

On the other side is the image of a what looks to be a Phoenix in flight.

In Japanese culture the phoenix is a symbol of good fortune and divine wisdom and is believed to appear only in times of peace and prosperity bringing with it a message of hope and rebirth. It also represents the goddess Amaterasu. A sun deity whose presence evokes the vital energy of the sun itself.

Then around the edges and down the sides it is decorated with profuse detailing in with a raised enamel finish.

There is no maker or mark of any kind on this piece but my understanding it is probably from the Meiji period, late 18th century.

The vase is in excellent undamaged condition with just a aged patina to the brass rim.

It measures 12.6” (32cm) high (to the rim) and is 6.5” (16.5cm) diameter at its widest point.

It weighs a heavy 1.9Kg.
