Large Framed Original Period Black and White Photo of the Royal Navy Battleship H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth
Here on offer is a large 23” by 9.5” framed and colour tinted, original period black and white photo of H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was the lead ship of her class of five dreadnought battleships built for the Royal Navy and launched in 1913 and was often used as a flagship. She served in the First World War as part of the Grand Fleet, and participated in the inconclusive action of 19th August 1916. Her service during the war generally consisted of routine patrols and training in the North Sea. She and the other super-dreadnought battleships were the first of their type to be powered by oil instead of coal. Queen Elizabeth later served in several theatres during the Second World War, and was scrapped in 1948.
The photo shows her at rest in what appears to be a Mediterranean setting, from the buildings, but I can’t identify exactly where it is?
The sea in the foreground has been hand colour tinted blue and the rest of the photo now has a slight aged sepia tone.
The photo quality is excellent and still very sharp, so if you zoom in, you can see a lot of detail on the ship.
The photo is mounted in a glass fronted thin black painted wooden frame, with a card and paper backing.
The photo does now show signs of creasing and some possible damp/water damage near the bottom, but is still a great piece of naval history and also makes an impressive display piece.
The frame is 23.5” (59.7cm) by 10” (25.4cm) and it weighs a heavy 1.2Kg.
