Original WW2 German 1944 SS Pocket Diary - Der Soldatenfreund – With Entries and Named to an SS- Unterscharfuhrer

Here on offer is a scarce original example of a WW2 German 1944 SS Pocket Diary, called “Der Soldatenfreund” that translates to “The Soldiers Friend”.

This 5” x 3” pocket diary has been “loved” and well used the owner and contains various entries and notes along with some personal information.

I must stress that although it seems to be complete with all its pages, a lot of pages have been held in place with strips of period clear tape. This has now become dry, losing its adessive qualities, so some of the pages are very close to becoming detached!

PLEASE NOTE: It needs to be treated with the greatest care to ensure it stays together, so do not hold the pages fully open or they will pull away from the spine and become loose!

The black outside covers are rubbed and have some creases.

In my opinion this is a museum quality piece and possibly warrants a professional book binder restoring and stabilising it for the future?

I have struggled to translate the handwritten German text, but it appears to have been owned and used by an SS-Unterscharfuhrer named Spitzhuttl with a SS service number 25405C.

The rank of SS-Unterscharfuhrer was a non-commissioned officer, SS-Junior section leader, equivalent to a British Corporal, I believe.

The calendar section has spaces for notes for all the dates in 1944 and this example contains various random hand written entries up to and including April 1944, with some images of what look like map symbols, maybe from a map reading course?

Inside the front cover there is a Himmler portrait and printed dedication.

The rear part of the diary is a reference section, with many colour plates.

It also has a colour foldout map with mainly Europe on one side and the whole world on the other. There is one small tear on the left-hand side.

This is a museum quality piece that albeit in a delicate condition it is extremely rare to find complete with the owner’s details and a lot of information that still warrants translating.

It measures approximately 5” (12.7cm) high by 3” (7.7cm) wide and 0.6” (1.4cm) thick.

It weighs 96g.
