WW2 German Navy Officers Kriegsmarine Dagger with Hammered Scabbard and Knot by E. & F. HORSTER
Here on offer is a beautiful early German Kriegsmarine Officer’s Dagger by E. & F. Horster, with the anchor pattern etched blade and much sort after hammered scabbard and original knot/portepee.
The ivory-coloured grip is the celluloid over wood version, which still has its original twisted bras grip wire. There is a long old hairline crack on the back and a smaller one on the side. Please see my photos.
The finely detailed brass crossguard and eagle pommel are in excellent condition and still retain most of the gilt finish.
The double fullered blade is in excellent condition and has the etched dolphin and fouled anchor pattern to both sides which is still crisp and clear, with some background darkening remaining. If I am being picky, there is just a few very light greying marks near the tip that may well polish out.
Both edges are knick free and the point is still very sharp.
On the reverse ricasso, it has impressed the double oval maker’s mark for E. & F. Horster and the words:
E. & F. HORSTER
SOLINGEN
It still retains its original brown leather scabbard buffer pad.
The blade fits very snuggly into the scabbard and the domed release button works perfectly.
The hammered pattern brass scabbard is in excellent, undented condition and retains some of its original gilt finish and both round-headed scabbard screws on the sides.
It also still has its silver bullion portepee that shows signs of quality repairs to areas of fraying. Silver thread has been used to strengthen and repair the worn areas.
It is tied correctly and from the wear/fraying, looks to have been fitted on the dagger since it was issued.
The blade measures 9.8” (25cm) and the dagger in the scabbard is 16.5” (42cm) long.
It weighs 445g.
This is a beautiful looking dagger that just screams “quality” and makes a great display piece.
