Unusual Solid Sterling Silver Inter-Services Swimming Championships Medal – 1961 Junior Championships - 1 Metre Springboard by F. Phillips of Aldershot
Here on offer is an unusual solid sterling silver Inter-Services swimming championships medal. It was awarded for 1st place in the junior championships, 1 metre springboard, held in 1961.
It also comes with its original red coloured card box.
I have seen a few of this type of Inter-Services medal before, that seem to date from the 1930’s through to the 1960’s, but never one made from solid sterling silver?
This impressive circular medal has been cast from solid sterling silver by the famous medal maker’s, F. Phillips of Aldershot.
The front depicts, in relief, the scene of possibly Boudica in a chariot that is being pulled by three horses, one with a fish body, one normal and one with wings. This represents the three British services, being Navy, Army and Air Force.
Below this are the words:
INTER-SERVICES
SWIMMING
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The reverse inside the laurel wreath, it is engraved with the words:
1961
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
1 METRE SPRINGBOARD
1ST
At the top, it is also stamped “STERLING SILVER” for 925 grade sterling silver.
It still comes with its original red coloured card box and in gold lettering on the top is printed:
F. PHILLIPS
MEDALLIST
ALDERSHOT
This medal is truly a fine quality piece that is in beautiful condition, with one ding to the edge and some slight discolouration to the silver that would polish bright if required.
It measures 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter and weighs 36g of solid silver.
