Antique English Hallmarked Silver & Enamel Watch Fob or Medal Awarded to P. H. Knowling for 20 Mile Walk in 1907
Here on offer is an antique English hallmarked silver and enamel watch fob or medal awarded to P. H. KNOWLING for a 20 mile walk in 1907.
The shield shaped fob has been made from a thick piece of solid silver and the front depicts the image of a race walker in the centre. Set in light and dark blue enamel are the words:
1907
20 MILE WALK
St ANDREWS CLUB COMPETITION
On the reverse it is engraved with the winner’s details and race time:
P. H. KNOWLING
3H. 41M. 42S
There is also a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “d” for the year 1903.
It also shows the makers mark (slightly worn), “W.J.D.” set in an indented rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:
William James Dingley
of Warstone Lane, Birmingham.
There is also a Registered Design, Rd No. 412171 that dates to 1903/4 when the design was first registered.
Attached to the top is a suspension loop and ring that is also stamped with the Lion Passant for English silver (925).
This fob is truly a fine quality piece that is in great condition with just a slight silver stain line across the back.
It measures 1.5” (3.7cm) to top of ring by 1” (2.4cm) wide.
It weighs 11g.
