WW1 Memorial Metal and Celluloid Matchbox Cover Honouring Nurse Edith Cavell - Brussels 1915
Here on offer is a WW1 memorial matchbox cover depicting the gallant nurse, Edith Cavell.
The metal and celluloid open sided matchbox cover has the image of Edith Cavell, set inside a laurel wreath on the front.
On the side is a statement from King George V:
“I ask you to make good these Sacrifices”
On the back is a Red Cross and the details:
BRUSSELS
1915
The whole matchbox cover is coated in a clear celluloid to protect the images. The front celluloid has now cracked with age and there is some slight staining underneath. On the back, almost all the red colour of the Red Cross has now faded, but the celluloid is still intact with no cracks.
It comes with an empty box of “The Blue Cross” safety matches.
Edith Cavell was a WW1 British nurse who is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers in Brussels from all sides without distinction. She and Belgian and French colleagues helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium.
She was arrested, tried with 33 others by a German military court, found guilty of ‘assisting men to the enemy’ and shot by a German firing squad on 12th October 1915.
The matchbox cover measures 2.3” (5.8cm) high by 1.6” (4cm) wide and is 0.9” (2.3cm) deep.
It weighs 30g.
