Antique Swiss William Tell & Lion of Lucerne - Twin Bladed Penknife by Joseph Feist Solingen - Circa 1920

Here on offer is an antique Swiss themed, William Tell and Lion of Lucerne, twin bladed penknife by Joseph Feist of Solingen, Germany, circa 1920.

The scales on this penknife are in excellent condition and are cast from aluminium.

On one side it depicts in relief, the Swiss national hero, William Tell and his son above the Swiss flag and the name “TELL” on a ribbon.

On the other side there is the famous Swiss Lion Monument, known as the Lion of Lucerne, which is a sculpture in carved in a rock face in Lucerne, Switzerland. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1820 and commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.

Below the image of the dying lion is the inscription “HELVETORIUM FIDEL AC VIRTUTI”.

This translates to “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”.

It has two stainless steel blades still open and close with a snap. They now have a greying to the finish and tiny nicks to the blade cutting edge.

On the ricasso of the larger blade it is marked with the Greek Omega letter and the words:

OMEGA
SOLINGEN

The Omega mark is a trademark that was used by Joseph Feist, of 18 Dolnerstrasse, Solingen, Germany, who manufactured between 1898 and 1924.

This knife will make a wonderful addition to any penknife collection.

One blade measure’s 1.4” (3.6cm) long and the other 1.1” (2.7cm). When closed, the knife measures 2.76” (7.2cm) and weighs 16g.
