Antique Dutch Brass Novelty Ships Engine Room Telegraph Cigar Cutter c1890

Here on offer is an unusual antique Dutch made brass novelty ships engine room telegraph, cigar or cheroot cutter, circa 1890.

The novelty cigar cutter has been designed as a ship’s engine room telegraph on a brass pedestal base.

It is operated by sliding the top control lever, backwards or forwards. There is a hole on the front of both sides where you insert the cigar, then slide the lever to move the steel cutting edge to cut the tip off the cigar.

The top section unscrews to allow the pieces of cut cigar to be removed.

The writing on each side that indicates the telegraphed request, backwards, forwards etc, is in Dutch, so hence I believe it has been made in the Netherlands in around 1890, albeit there is no maker’s mark.

It is in excellent condition in working order and the brass retains a nice age patina.

It measures 5.75” (14.5cm) high to the top of the lever and the base is 3.2” (9.6cm) diameter.

It weighs 145g.
