Original WW2 German Afrika Korps - Luftwaffe Breast Eagle and National Tricolour Cockade
Here on offer is a British veteran “bring back”, original Luftwaffe Afrika Korps Breast Eagle NCO’s insignia and National Tricolour Cockade.
I was told they were removed from a damaged Afrika Korps Luftwaffe NCO/EM Visored Field Cap.
The breast eagle is formed on tan-coloured cotton with a machine embroidered silver-grey Luftwaffe eagle, clutching a swastika. The Eagle was not trimmed but embroidered on triangular cotton, with the edged folded before stitched by machine.
The tri-coloured cockade also seems to be machine-embroidered or possibly machine woven.
Afrika Korps
The Afrika Korps was formed on 11th January 1941, which was led by one WW2 German favourite generals, Erwin Rommel, who was put in command on the 11th of February 1941.
Jagdgesschwader 27 (JG 27) was the fighter wing of the Luftwaffe during WW2, the wing was given the name “Africa” which served in North African Campaign from April 1941 – September 1942. The unit fought in every major theatre in which the Wehrmacht operated.
The insignia are in great condition with just some fraying to the tips of the triangular cotton on the breast eagle.
The breast eagle measures 3.7” (9.5cm) wide and the cockade is 1.1” (2.7cm) diameter.
