French Model 1842 Yataghan Sword Bayonet -German Blade Marked F. H for Fredrich Horster with Scabbard

Here on offer is what I believe to be a 1st pattern French Model 1842 yataghan sword bayonet, with a German blade marked “F. H” for Fredrich Horster and comes with its original scabbard.

This bayonet is brass-hilted with a spring steel latching arrangement on the right side. This example has the earlier “nipple” release button that is still in working order.

The crossguard is iron (steel) and with a "cock's comb" muzzle-ring finial. The lower quillion is a hooked "blade-breaker" type.

One edge is stamped the number 383 and on the other side the number 7 or 9, it is hard to read? Underneath it is stamped with the letter L.

The crossguard and steel spring now have a pitted finish to the steel.

The blade is steel, single-edged, fullered (both sides), with a re-curved or "yataghan-shape." The polished steel blade shows signs of light pitting and greying to the finish.

On one side near the crossguard, it is stamped with the marker’s mark being the letters F. H in an oval of dots.

This relates to the famous German sword maker, Fredrich Horster of Solingen, Germany.

These bayonets were widely copied and used by many countries - including the United States, Belgium, and Germany. Many of the actual French-marked bayonets can be found with German manufactured blades, such as this example.

The blades are usually marked on the back-edge (opposite the cutting edge) with the arsenal, month, and year of manufacture, but this example has not been marked.

It is believed some of these were used during the American Civil War when many European arsenals were emptied of their surplus arms.

These bayonets were manufactured from 1842 to about 1866 at which time they were superseded by the French Model 1866 “Chassepot” Bayonet.

The scabbard is made from a blued sheet of rolled steel with a ball finial and hanging loop on the back. On the front it is stamped with “12 F”.
It is in undamaged condition, no splits or dents, just it now has an overall age pitting to the blued finish.

The blade measures 22.75” (57.8cm) and the bayonet itself 27.75” (70.5cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 1.3Kg.
