Vintage Scout Knife by Wade & Butcher with Leather Sheath by John Leckie & Co. c1930

Here on offer is great example of a vintage scout knife, made by the famous razor and knife manufacturer, Wade & Butcher, of Sheffield, England, circa 1930.

It comes with its original brown leather sheath that was made by John Leckie & Co.

The grip is in excellent condition are is made up of stacked leather sections along with brown and red Bakelite, that are separated by brass rings.
These are all held firmly in place by a smooth polished aluminium pommel.

The 4” clip point Bowie blade is made from high quality Sheffield steel and has a part blood grove on both sides and a serrated top edge.

The ricasso is stamped on one side with:

WADE & BUTCHER
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

and on the other side it has the maker’s mark, being the Maltase cross, long arrow and letter “B” in a circle.

The blade shows some signs of light pitting and has clearly been sharpened during its life. It retains a good cutting edge and has scratches to the blade surface.

The knife fits snuggly into its stitched and riveted, brown leather sheath. It has belt loop slots at the top and still retains its press stud fastening strap.

It has age usage marks and scratches to its finish and someone has scrapped the front section at some point in time, to remove a name or image?

On the back is an impressive trade mark stamp that depicts a boy scout standing on a rock set in an oval, with the words BOY SCOUTS BE PREPARDED. Below this is the maker’s name that you can just make out to be LECKIE & Co.

John Leckie & Company are famous for making saddles and leather goods at their London Saddlery Works in Goodall Street, Walsall, West Midlands.

This is a great example of a rare vintage English scout knife. that is so tactile to hold.

The blade measures 4” (10.2cm) and the knife itself 8.25” (21cm) long.

With the sheath it weighs 215g.
