Vintage Scottish Sgian Dubh with Hand Carved Wooden Grip and Polished Brass Fittings
Here on offer is a great example of a vintage Scottish Sgian Dubh with hand carved wooden grip and polished brass fittings.
The hilt has a beautiful hand carved wood grip with an interlaced design that is topped with a brass pommel and at the base of the hilt is a plain brass ferrule.
The short polished stainless-steel blade has small “blood” groves on both sides and a faceted top edge along half its length. It is in mint condition.
The brown leather-covered scabbard has polished brass fittings and is in great condition.
The blade fits very snuggly into the scabbard and needs to be pushed all the way it to fit properly.
The sgian-dubh is a small, single-edged knife (Gaelic sgian) worn as part of traditional Scottish Highland Dress along with the Kilt.
Originally used for eating and preparing fruit, meat, and cutting bread and cheese - as well as serving for other more general day to day uses such as cutting material and protection, it is now worn as part of traditional Scottish dress tucked into the top of the kilt hose with only the upper portion of the hilt visible.
The knife in the scabbard measures 7.9” (20cm) long with the blade measuring 3.5” (9cm).
With the scabbard it weighs 43g.
