Elizabeth II - Special Constabulary Long Service Medal with 1985 Bar, Rosette Ribbon Bar and Case to JAMES H. GRITT

Here on offer is an original Elizabeth II - Special Constabulary Long Service Medal with 1985 Bar. It also comes with a Rosette Ribbon Bar and its original presentation case.

It was presented to JAMES H. GRITT and his name is stamped on the lower rim of the medal.

I believe the 1985 medal bar was awarded for an additional 10 years of continuous service.

This medal also comes with the rarer Rosette Ribbon Bar, set with a silver rosette. This represents the fact a bar was awarded to the owner.

The medal and the ribbon come with the original fitted presentation case. It has a silk lining under the lid with the Royal Mint crest, indicating it was made at the Royal Mint.

The Special Constabulary Long Service Medal is a long service medal awarded in the United Kingdom to members of the Special Constabulary who have completed a specified period of service.

These medals where established on 30th August 1919 by King George V.

The medal was initially established as the Special Constabulary Medal. The intent of the original warrant was to recognize the service of the members of the Special Constabulary during WW1, with further regulations to recognize nine years of service as a member of the Special Constabulary. A new Royal Warrant was promulgated in 1920 changing the name of the medal to the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal.

The medal was usually awarded to all ranks in the Special Constabulary for nine years unpaid service, with more than 50 duties per annum. War service with at least 50 duties counted as double.

For those Special Constables who served during WW1 the medal was awarded for three years’ service, and had performed at least 150 police duties.

The gilt bronze medal is in excellent condition and retains all its gilt finish, which now has a nice age patina to the finish.

It is unusual to find a complete set like this with a Rosette Ribbon Bar and original case.

The full-size medal measures approximately 1.4” (36mm) diameter.

With the case it weighs 130g.
