Large Antique English Hallmarked Silver Watch Fob with Shield Engraved - FA AC 1893 - by Charles Edward Soloman - 1892

Here on offer is the large antique English silver watch fob with a shield cartouche engraved with “FA AC 1893”, made by Charles Edward Soloman in 1892.

The front of the fob shows some ornate chisel work with a pierced leaf and scroll design, with a raised ribbon and shield cartouche.

The raised shield shaped cartouche has been engraved with:

FA AC
1893

The reverse has been engraved with the event, winner’s details and date:

A .W AKLEY
NUNNEY
and
MARSTON
40Min 31Sec
Dec. 9. 1893

There is also a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “S” for the year 1892.

It also shows the makers mark, “CES.” set in an indented rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:

Charles Edward Soloman of Vyse Street, Birmingham.

Now the English parish of Nunney, in Somerset is a few miles from Marston and Frome.

So even though I am unsure of what this fob exactly relates too, I assume it is athletics, possibly a cross country run, referencing “Nunney and Marston” and the FA AC could be “Frome Amateur Athletics Club”?

However, I can’t find any proof of this online, but is worth further research.

This fob is truly a fine quality piece that is in beautiful undamaged condition.

Even the fob suspension ring is hallmarked with the English Lion mark!

It measures 2” (5.3cm) to top of ring by 1.4” (3.6cm) wide.

It weighs a heavy 24.5g of silver.
