Traditional Wooden British Police Truncheon with Black Leather Carry Case c1950

Here on offer is a fine example of a vintage British Police truncheon with its original black leather carry case, circa 1950.

The British Bobby (policeman) was actually created by the early Victorian Prime Minister Robert Peel (1788-1850). Initially they were known as "Peelers" but the term "Bobby" being short for Robert was soon part of the language.

Here we have original British Police Truncheons (short night-sticks) well made from wood with a finger grooved hilt and leather wrist strap complete in an original dated black leather belt carrier.

First introduced during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) these carriers were in use up until the late 1960s. Thereafter, truncheons were carried in a special long pocket of the uniform trousers. For more than a century and a half, the only weapon a Bobby carried was his truncheon, sadly with modern times and the rise of terrorism; firearms are now additionally issued to nearly all British police units.

These very scarce leather belt carriers are made of heavy gauge quality black leather with strong stitching and some are maker marked, this example isn’t.

Most where traditionally made by "Hobson’s and Sons of London" a company in founded in 1850 and still in existence today.

These truncheons with carriers are truly a reminder of more peaceful times when the law was truly represented by the lone "Bobby on the Beat".

This fine truncheon has the usual turned grip and long lower shaped section, without any markings or maker’s details. It is made from a very dense African dark wood or possibly lignum vita?

At the top of the grip, it still also retains its original long brown leather strap, that is held in place by two steel rivets.

Both the truncheon and case are in excellent/near mint condition with just very minimal light scratches near the tip of the truncheon.

This set would be hard to upgrade and makes a great addition to any police collection

I think this set is from the late 1950’ or early 1960’s.

The truncheon itself measures 14.75” (37.5cm) long, by 1.7” (4.3cm) diameter at the wide end.

With the case, it weighs a heavy 690g.
