Unusual Ornate Antique Brass Travelling Inkwell and Pen Rest c1880

Here on offer is an unusual ornate antique brass travelling inkwell and pen rest, circa 1880.

This small inkwell and pen rest has been made from brass that has been engraved with a floral pattern on the top of the main body and the lid.

The top lid is held by catch which when released hinges open to reveal another smaller lid that also locks in place and forms an ink tight seal with the sprung seal under the lid. This makes this example usable as a desk inkwell or it can be taken with you whilst travelling as it will not leak!

The small clear glass inkwell fits inside and is in perfect condition.

It dates from around the late 19th century and was probably part of a ladies writing set, used during her various travels during the Victorian period.


The brass now has a great aged patina and is in excellent condition, with just a very slight crease to the top of the lid.

This fine example is designed to protect the glass inkwell, which it does very well.

It measures 4” (10.2cm) square and 1.5” (3.8cm) tall.

It weighs 92g.
